‘In photography there are no shadows that cannot be illuminated’’.August Sander

Artists pay a lot of attention to light, one of the most crucial elements of a good photograph. But what would light be without shadows?

Shadows are a critical element in photography, helping to create depth, texture, and mood in images. Photographers can use shadows to add a sense of dimensionality and atmosphere to their images, drawing the viewer’s eye and creating a more engaging visual experience.

By understanding the importance of shadows in photography and learning how to use them effectively, photographers can elevate their craft and create more compelling and visually stunning images. Whether shooting portraits, landscapes, or still objects, shadows are an essential tool in any photographer’s arsenal, enabling them to create images that are both technically sound and aesthetically pleasing.

The poetry of shadows lies in their ability to evoke emotions and tell a story. A simple silhouette of a person walking down a street can capture the essence of loneliness, solitude, or freedom. Shadows can create a sense of drama, mystery, or foreboding, with the shadows of trees or buildings casting ominous patterns on the ground.

Shadows can also be used to create contrast and highlight specific details in an image. By using shadows to obscure certain parts of the image, the viewer’s attention is drawn to the illuminated parts, creating a sense of focus and intention. By manipulating the intensity of the shadows, photographers can create a sense of drama or calm, depending on the mood they want to convey.

For this new edition of AAP Magazine, my choices were based on a number of factors: how did the image express the theme? Were “shadows” stated or implied, literal or metaphorical? Did the submitted images make sense as a whole during the final curation process?
